My Secret to a Healthy Hustle – Why I Swear by Journaling

Hey there, my fellow healthy hustlers! It’s me, your girl from Her Healthy Hustles, and today, I want to share something truly personal and transformative with you. Something that is, without a doubt, the single most powerful tool in my self-care arsenal- journaling. If you read my blog, you know that my life is, well, a hustle. Between running this blog, my fulltime job, managing my place, and trying to keep up with life, things can get pretty chaotic. But what you might not know is that my sanity isn’t just about my green smoothies or my morning workouts- it’s about the quiet moments I spend with a pen and paper.

For a long time, I thought journaling was just for people with perfectly organized lives and beautiful handwriting. But over the years, I’ve come to see it as a non-negotiable part of my routine. It’s my anchor, my therapist, my best friend, and my direct line to God. In a world that is constantly pulling us in a million directions, journaling is the one thing that helps me center myself, process my emotions, and stay true to my purpose. It’s my way of making sure my hustle is healthy, not just relentless.

More Than Just a Diary- My Collection of Notebooks

If you were to peek into my place, you’d find a great collection of notebooks. Some are pristine, leather-bound journals just waiting for a deep thought. Others are filled with messy scribbles and random notes. I’m not a minimalist when it comes to journaling- I embrace it all. There’s something about the physicality of it- the feeling of a pen on paper, the act of filling a blank page with my thoughts. It feels intentional and real.

My journaling practice is anything but uniform. I have my main journal for long-form entries, a smaller one for on-the-go thoughts, and a specific one for Bible study. I’m not a fan of rigid rules, so I let my mood dictate which notebook I reach for. Sometimes, my thoughts are too fast to keep up with in a physical notebook, which is why my phone’s Notes app and the Journey app are also filled with random thoughts. It’s all part of the same process- a messy, beautiful exploration of my mind. The key for me isn’t about having a perfect system- it’s about making sure I have an outlet for every thought, big or small.

My Morning Ritual- The Magic of Morning Pages

One of the most impactful habits I’ve adopted is writing my Morning Pages. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re a concept from Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. The idea is simple- write three pages of stream-of-consciousness longhand, first thing in the morning. No rules, no editing, just pure, unfiltered thoughts. It’s a mental decluttering session. I’ll write about anything- my worries from the day before, my plans for the day ahead, a random song stuck in my head, or even just “I don’t know what to write.”

This practice has become my secret to a clear mind. It helps me empty out the mental junk so that I can start my day with a clean slate. It’s like hitting a reset button. I’ve found that when I skip my morning pages, I feel more scattered and less focused throughout the day. It’s not just a writing exercise- it’s a form of mental hygiene that sets the tone for a productive and peaceful day.

Releasing Stress and Processing Emotions

One of the primary reasons I keep a journal is to release stress. Life, especially a life full of hustling, comes with its fair share of pressure. There are days when I feel overwhelmed by deadlines, client demands, and all the expectations I put on myself. Instead of letting that stress bottle up inside me, I pour it onto the pages of my journal. It’s a private, judgment-free space where I can vent, complain, and get it all out.

Journaling also helps me process my emotions. When I’m feeling a particularly strong emotion, whether it’s sadness, anger, or even immense joy, I write about it. The act of putting feelings into words gives them a shape and a form. It helps me understand why I’m feeling a certain way and what I can do about it. It’s a form of self-therapy that helps me gain perspective and clarity. I’ve found that the simple act of writing, “I am so frustrated because,” can unlock insights I would have never found just by thinking about the problem.

A Direct Line to God- My Spiritual Practice

For me, journaling is also a way to talk to God. My faith is a huge part of my life, and my journal has become a sacred space for me to connect with Him. I often start my entries with a prayer, thanking Him for the blessings in my life and asking for guidance on challenges. I also love to write out Bible texts. This helps me meditate on the scriptures and allows me to see how they apply to my current situation.

I’ve found that my journaling practice deepens my spiritual connection. It’s not just about a formal prayer- it’s a continuous, authentic conversation. Sometimes, I’ll be writing about a problem and feel a sense of peace wash over me, or a clear thought will emerge that I know is a message from Him. This is the ultimate form of soul-care for me- nurturing my spirit alongside my mind and body.

Journaling as a Tool for Self-Discovery

Beyond stress release and spiritual connection, journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery. It helps me track my progress, both personally and professionally. I can look back at old entries and see how far I’ve come. I can see patterns in my thoughts and behaviors that I might not have noticed otherwise. This self-awareness is invaluable for personal growth. It helps me identify what’s working, what’s not, and where I need to make changes.

The beauty of journaling is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it. You don’t have to be a writer or have a perfectly neat notebook. You just have to show up, be honest with yourself, and let the words flow. Whether it’s in a fancy leather journal or a crumpled piece of paper, the benefits are the same. It’s an act of prioritizing your inner world in a world that is so focused on external achievement.

So, to my fellow healthy hustlers- I encourage you to give it a try. Find a notebook you love, a pen that feels good in your hand, and just start writing. You don’t have to show it to anyone. It’s just for you. Trust me, it’s a habit that will not only help you manage the hustle, but also help you thrive in it.
